Houston SR22 Insurance Information

What is an SR22 ?

An SR 22 filing requirement is most often due to a traffic violation. Failure to comply with an ordered SR22 filing requirement will usually result in suspension of an individuals driving privileges. DWI's, DUI's and Tickets for Driving Without Insurance or Financial Responsibility are common reasons and SR22 is ordered, occasionally there may be other reasons a filing is required. The SR22 Form is ordered by a court or by a licensing authority and can be issued by an appropriately licensed Insurer in your state of residence. The Insurance represented must meet the minimum limits for the ordering state. In Texas 25/50/25 or 75 total is the minimum required coverage. Each state regulates it's own Financial Responsibility and minimum required limits. The face of the Form SR22 evidences that the named insured now meets at least the minimum limits for the ordering state.

License Suspended

If you've already had your License suspended and an SR22 is required. You will need to file the form with the appropriate fines or fees before your license suspension will be lifted.

Filing Term

In Texas the customary required filing term is for 2 to 3 years from the date of License Suspension.

During this time you must maintain an SR22 filing in order to keep your license valid and current. If your auto Insurance Policy expires, is cancelled or ceases coverage for any reason during the ordered filing period. The insurer is required by law to notify the ordering State. Such a notice that your SR22 Filing has been cancelled or withdrawn will result in subsequent License Suspension.

Penalty for Failure to Maintain SR 22

When notice that your coverage and SR 22 filing is no longer valid is received by the State Licensing Authority, and if your filing period requirement has not yet been met, The Drivers License is generally suspended again until such time as a replacement SR22 is filed by another Insurance Company.

It is important during this time that your Drivers License address information be correct and up to date with your State Licensing Authority. You will usually receive any notice from them regarding the status of your driving privileges, renewals and notices of suspension at the home address listed on your license
